This Week’s Prompts
How can we, as bloggers, promote diversity of all sorts in the book world? What are some things you think publishers should do to promote diversity? Is there something a publisher or another blogger is doing right now that you think is a step in the right direction? What are some things you do personally?
How can bloggers promote diversity in the book world?
Honestly, I think the best way to help promote diversity in the book communities we inhabit is to read and review diverse books. I think it’s our responsibility as people who share our interest in books with the world to make sure the books we discuss on our platforms have a wide representation of the different people in the world.
What are some things publishers should do to promote diversity?
This one is tough because honestly publishing is an absolute mystery to me. I don’t know much about how it works at all. That’s on a list of things to research when my book is close enough to done that I’ll need to decide for certain if I want to self-publish or traditionally publish. I think publishers could probably put more effort into seeking out own voices novels. I also think it’s garbage that diversity doesn’t sell well. It’s just an excuse to continue pushing novels without diversity.
Is there something a publisher or another blogger is doing right now that you think is a step in the right direction?
Hmmm, I don’t have any specific examples of publishers or bloggers if I’m being honest. I already try to only follow people who like to read and promote diverse books. I think as bloggers that’s all we really can do. For publishers, I have even less to say. Just a repeat of what I think they should do, I suppose.
What are some things you do personally?
Personally, I try to read mostly diverse books. That means when I make book lists, reviews, or talk about books in general, my go to books are already pretty diverse. I also purposely seek out diverse books to add to my TBR. I try to discuss with other people in and out of the community how important representation in media is for people in marginalized communities. There’s always more I could be doing and I’m always trying to find new ways to help promote diversity so if you have any tips not mentioned here please drop a comment!
Like I said last week, this topic is very important to me since I’m part of a few marginalized communities. I know if books had been more diverse when I was growing up I probably wouldn’t have struggled so hard with finding myself.
